Every hosting review on HostingDive is backed by real data. Here’s exactly how we test, what we measure, and how we turn that into scores you can trust.

Our Principles
Most hosting review sites summarize spec sheets and regurgitate marketing copy. We don’t do that. Every host we review has been purchased with real money, deployed with a real test WordPress site, and monitored over time with third-party tools. No host receives our review data in advance, and no host can purchase placement in our rankings.
Our methodology was designed to answer the question a real user cares about: “If I sign up for this hosting plan today, what will my actual experience be — today and a year from now?”

HostingDive.com itself runs on Hostinger’s Business plan. This gives us firsthand, real-world operational experience with one of the hosts we review. We’ve encountered real support tickets, real server maintenance windows, and real performance variations. We disclose this openly — it informs our Hostinger review but does not inflate our scores. Hostinger’s ranking reflects our data across all six testing categories, not our status as a customer.
1. Uptime Monitoring
Category Weight: 30%
Uptime is the most fundamental metric for any web host. A beautiful website on slow hardware is frustrating; a website that’s offline is useless. We take uptime measurement seriously and invest in long-term monitoring — not a 30-day snapshot.
What We Measure
- →Overall uptime percentage over the full monitoring period
- →Number and duration of individual outage incidents
- →Longest single downtime event
- →Patterns: are outages clustered at certain times (maintenance windows, peak traffic)?
- →Response time as a secondary signal (not scored separately — used to cross-check speed data)
How We Score Uptime
- →5.0 — 99.95% or above (less than ~4.4 hrs downtime/year)
- →4.0 to 4.9 — 99.90% to 99.94%
- →3.0 to 3.9 — 99.80% to 99.89%
- →2.0 to 2.9 — 99.50% to 99.79%
- →1.0 to 1.9 — below 99.50%
2. Speed Testing
Category Weight: 25%
Page load speed affects user experience, bounce rates, and SEO rankings. We test speed using a standardized WordPress installation with a fixed theme and no caching plugins — the same setup on every host — to ensure apples-to-apples comparisons.
Test Setup
- →Freshly installed WordPress with a lightweight default theme (Twenty Twenty-Four or equivalent)
- →Three test pages: homepage (basic text + one image), a medium post (1,000 words + 3 images), a WooCommerce product page
- →No caching, CDN, or performance optimization plugins — we want to measure raw host performance first
- →Tests run at different times of day including peak hours
Testing Tools
- →GTmetrix: Measures TTFB (Time to First Byte), LCP, TBT, and overall page load time from multiple global nodes
- →Pingdom Website Speed Test: Provides waterfall view and performance grade from US and EU endpoints
- →Google PageSpeed Insights: Core Web Vitals scores (LCP, FID/INP, CLS) for both mobile and desktop
3. Load Testing
Category Weight: 10%
Single-user speed tests tell only part of the story. We also want to know how a host performs under concurrent traffic — when multiple visitors hit your site at the same time. This is especially relevant for shared hosting, where server resources are divided among many customers.
Our Load Test Process
- →We use Loader.io to simulate concurrent virtual users hitting the test site homepage
- →Three ramp profiles: 25 concurrent users, 50 concurrent users, 100 concurrent users
- →Each test runs for 60 seconds at peak load
- →We measure response time degradation (how much slower does each request get as load increases?)
- →We record error rates — a host that returns errors at 50 concurrent users fails this category
- →Tests are run during peak hours to reflect real-world conditions on shared servers
What Makes a Good Score
- →5.0 — Response time stays within 200% of baseline at 100 concurrent users, less than 1% error rate
- →4.0 to 4.9 — Moderate degradation (up to 300%), error rate under 2%
- →Below 3.0 — Significant slowdown or errors appear before 50 concurrent users
4. Support Evaluation
Category Weight: 20%
Great performance means nothing if you’re stuck with broken hosting and no help in sight. We treat support evaluation as a first-class testing category, not an afterthought.
Our Support Testing Protocol
- →Minimum of 10 support interactions per host before scoring
- →Contacts include both live chat and ticket/email where available
- →Tests are deliberately conducted at off-hours — evenings, weekends, and holidays — to evaluate real staffing levels
- →We submit a mix of difficulty levels: basic billing questions, intermediate WordPress issues, and advanced server configuration questions
- →All interactions are timed from first message to first useful response
- →Responses are graded on: accuracy, completeness, tone, and whether the issue was actually resolved
Scoring Dimensions
- →Response time: How quickly did the first useful response arrive?
- →Accuracy: Was the answer technically correct?
- →Resolution rate: Did the agent actually solve the problem?
- →Consistency: Were results consistent across multiple interactions?
5. Pricing Analysis
Category Weight: 10%
Hosting pricing is one of the most misleading areas in the industry. Introductory rates are often 70–80% lower than renewal rates. A host that looks cheap at sign-up can become one of the most expensive options by year two. We model true cost — not the number on the landing page.
Our Pricing Methodology
- →3-year total cost model: We calculate the total spend over 36 months using published renewal rates (not intro rates)
- →We account for: plan price, domain registration, required add-ons for comparable feature sets, and SSL certificates where not included
- →All prices are compared at an equivalent feature tier (e.g., plans supporting 1 website, 10GB+ storage, free SSL, email included)
- →We note where hosts require long-term commitments to access advertised rates
- →Pricing data is verified against each host’s live pricing page at the time of review and updated quarterly
Value Score
The pricing score is not purely “cheaper = better.” We score value: how much performance, reliability, and features does each host deliver per dollar spent over 3 years?
6. Security Audit
Category Weight: 5%
A secure hosting environment is baseline table stakes — but there’s significant variation in what hosts provide. We evaluate the security infrastructure available to shared hosting customers on standard plans.
What We Audit
- →SSL/TLS: Is free SSL included? Is auto-renewal handled? Do they enforce HTTPS by default?
- →Web Application Firewall (WAF): Is a WAF available on standard plans, or only on premium tiers?
- →Malware scanning: Is automated malware scanning included? How frequently does it run?
- →Backup systems: Are daily backups automated? How many restore points are retained? Is restoration self-service?
- →DDoS protection: Is basic DDoS mitigation in place at the infrastructure level?
- →Two-factor authentication: Is 2FA available for account login?
- →Software isolation: Are shared hosting accounts properly isolated from each other?
Scoring System
Every category is scored on a 1.0 to 5.0 scale. The overall score is a weighted average based on what we believe matters most to the typical web hosting customer:

The Rating Scale
Scores are reviewed and updated whenever we collect new monitoring data, run new speed or load tests, or experience significant changes to a host’s service level. Review dates are shown on each individual review page.
External Sources & Cross-Referencing
Our primary data is collected independently. We also cross-reference our findings against respected third-party publications to identify any significant discrepancies and validate our conclusions. Where our data conflicts with an external benchmark, we investigate further rather than blindly deferring to either source.
